About the estate

A single estate, managed end to end.

Benchmark Coffee Traders distributes high-quality green coffee from Sigri Estate in Papua New Guinea. We have direct relationships with these producers and work closely with them to bring their coffee to roasters in America.

Sigri supports a strong social agenda that provides housing, healthcare, and schooling to the coffee pickers and farmers who help produce these coffees — grown at over 5,000 feet elevation, with soil and water conservation treated as a priority throughout the estate.

Growing conditions

Bird-friendly, shade-grown, built for even ripening.

Sigri is bird- and eco-friendly, employing a medium-density shade strategy with two types of shade trees. This promotes even ripening of the coffee cherries and provides habitat for at least 90 species of birds.

Processing

A rigorous, hands-on wet-factory process.

Sigri is a washed Arabica that undergoes a rigorous wet-factory process, with quality control starting in the field.

  1. Hand-picked and checked for uniformity

Cherries must be red and fully ripe, ensuring the correct balance of sugar and acid before they're selected.

  2. Pulped the same day

Selected cherry is pulped on the day of picking, with no delay between harvest and processing.

  3. Three-day fermentation, plus total immersion

A three-day fermentation period broken every 24 hours by washing, followed by a further day of total immersion in water to balance the flavors.

  4. Sun-dried and conditioned for 21 days

After sun-drying, coffees are carefully conditioned for 21 days before moving to final preparation.

  5. Destoning, hulling, and sorting

Grading, densometric sorting, color sorting, and a final round of hand-sorting complete the process.

Home of our "Kula" lots.

Coffees bearing the Kula name are dried on raised beds and go through two rounds of color-sorting and two rounds of hand-sorting — extra processing that produces some of the cleanest PNG coffee being produced today.
